Mike is a retired federal scientist and safety officer, who also served as a college instructor. He provided comprehensive training for government personnel in CPR, First Aid, and Wilderness First Aid. Additionally, he conducted courses on over-water training, fire extinguisher safety, and the management of cold stress and heat stress. Mike holds both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Environmental Science from Florida International University (FIU) in Miami.

Mike has lived in Florida for 40 years and worked and camped in the Everglades, Florida Keys, Biscayne Bay, Jacksonville, Florida Panhandle, Naples and Florida Springs. He has also lived in Alaska, South Lake Tahoe and Seattle.
